Right after graduating from Georgian College four years ago, I was hired as a junior designer at Treefrog Interactive Inc. With hard work, I made my way up to senior designer and then art director – I now manage all the design work that goes through the company. I set the priorities for my team, deciding what gets done and when, quoting projects, attending meetings with clients and working with designers to provide direction on artwork. I also continue to do some of the design work myself.
The Art and Design Fundamentals course helped me focus on what area of the art world I wanted to study. The Graphic Design course gave me a good basis of knowledge and an ability to use the tools needed to be a designer. It also gave me a good taste of the different aspects of the design world – from print design, to advertising, to web – which helped me decide what area I wanted to focus on in my job.
I loved the great teachers at Georgian, who have real-world and hands-on experience. The class work relates well to projects you will experience in the field. The number one thing I learned there is that, as a graphic designer, you’re designing for your client and their target market. Part of success comes from always keeping the client’s goals in mind.
